i have a room with four white walls...it is so boring...so far i do have some things up on the walls (my greeting/postcard collage, a wall scroll, children's drawings) but i want to know how i can add some good color to the room...for curtains i have some thin ugly green ones (getting new ones soon i hope) but i'll probably end up with black curtains to block out the street lights at night...anyone have any cheap diy idea's that i can use? oh and i am not allowed to put holes in the walls...darn lease rules :P

Does that mean you can't use tacks, or you can't use nails/screws?

Hmmm. Since you can't paint (I hate lease rules too, I'm stuck with a RED room with RED carpet...it can get depressing) Maybe use curtains of different colors (or your favorite color) and expand the area they cover. Like This:

If it's a small room, it might make it feel smaller, though. Adding a mirror is also a good idea too, it can really make a space feel bigger.

Or (I suggest this site for inspiration, it's kinda exspenive in my opinion) If you're good with an exactoknife: http://dalidecals.com/

Vinyl decals are easy to remove and the vinyl is very easy to cut any shape out of. You can find the vinyl at most craft stores.

Why not get those stick on wall decals you can find at pretty much any department store? They make some pretty awesome ones!

You could put nails and screws... Just be sure before you leave to fill them with putty or toothpaste and paint them over to match the wall. No one will know~~ :3

I use these things called "command hooks" everywhere in my room. They are hooks that stick to the wall with adhesive. I am using 6 of them right now to keep my full length mirror up. You can use them to hang pictures on the wall, hang your purses from them, etcccc. They are very awesome.

There is also this putty thing I've heard of that you can use to stick lightweight things, like unframed posters, to the wall.

Other decoration ideas

From the dollar store;

- You can get simple clear vases that you can fill with colorful flowers or lucky stars! (You can also use these vases to store your makeup brushes, pens&pencils)

- They have wall stickers in my dollar store. Most of the designs are kind of bleah, but there are a few that are okay

- you can pick up craft supplies to make a cool mobile/curtain like this; http://bugsandfishes.blogspot.com/2009/02/butterflies-for-spring.html

- cheap frames you can repaint or deco and fill with your favorite artworks

Elsewhere:

- I picked up pink and blue candy ornaments from the after xmas sale at target and hung them around my room. They aren't traditional xmas colors and make the room look very sweet! You can find some other, less sweet neutral ornaments as well, like birds or jewels, etc that are nice to hang in your window.

- Walmart has very cheap sheer ivory/white curtain panels (like $4). I would put them under the black ones, so you can draw back the black curtains during the day. The sunlight will be very pretty and soft when it filters through the sheer curtains.

- Fairylights are really nice! You can hang them up using the command hooks.

- Plants are nice to brighten up a room

- A bulletin board that you can decorate and fill with inspiring pictures or quotes could be nice! You can either hang up with the command hooks or just let it rest against the wall on top of a dresser.

- You can buy a pillow or pillowcase in a color you like to add a pop of color to the room.

- A throw/blanket can do the same...basically changing out your sheets to something colorful can give your room a boost.

- And lamps can also do the same - either with a colorful lampshade (you can DIY decorate one too) or a colorful lamp. You can find pretty cheap, color desklamps at walmart or target in the dorm section.

- If you have fabric scraps you can wrap canvases (or any stiff/rigid, flat rectangular or square piece) with them to create pretty wall art, like this: http://designdazzle.blogspot.com/2009/02/fabric-covered-canvas-art.html If you don't have fabric scraps, fabric stores like JoAnns often sell fat quarters (1/4 yard) for like $1-2 in tons of designs.

- If you have nice hairclips or bows, you can take a 1 inch wide strip of ribbon, pin it to the wall by mirror/desk/wherever you get ready in the morning with a pushpin and clip your hairpins and bows to it. The length of the ribbon will depend on how many hairclips and bows you want to display

In that case, just stick to the command hooks~

who says you can use a nail or screw? I'm renting my apartments too, and a few holes will not ruin the wall, it'n not like you gonna do a collage, but of course you can hang a painting. I really doubt somone would kill you for that. I always fill them in with putty as well before i move (white walls are awesome cus you can't see it). And even if they did a closeup inspection, what could they possibly say "you have to pay for this wall becasue we have to change it?" No, you only have to pay for things that are ruined and that has to be repaired or replaced. Normal use is totally fine.

These hooks were made for situations like these. I'm sure you have them in your country too. They come in differnt sies. We call them concrete hooks because they're so awesome for concrete walls (which is a living hell to screw in) but they're particullary good for places where you cant screw in the wall. The marks they're leaving while taking them down are like 1mm in size, so it's not visible (I alwasy fill it with putty anyway) It's as close as invisible you can ever get.

I saw this girl using something to hang things on walls and door without leaving any marks. I'm not sure what it is, but i bet she's american so maybe you have heard of it or know where to ask for it. She says she uses it a lot, so it seems good.

I used to live in a house where we weren't allowed to hang anything with nails or screws either so I used this stuff caled Blu tak to hang posters and stuff. I'm not sure they have it in the US tho...

But I did see an ad on TV for these things called comand strips which can help you hang things on your walls without leaving a mark.
