Gyaru as it sounds like means 'girl or gal' in Japanese. The name started in the 70's and it originated from a brand. The word 'gyaru' is normally associated with younger group whose image tends to be more rebellious, fashion oriented and childish.
How can you describe a typical gyaru look?
A Japanese friend of mine told me once that, they want to look like Mariah Carey, Beyonce and Paris Hilton. An Japanese version of American celebrities.
(from a magazine scan somewhere on the internet via google)
As the style emerges, it was subdivided into different categories. While there are also others that have emerge from these styles... I have found these to be the 'main' categories. I may edit this entry for add-ons. Comment if you want to add more.
