In lolita you find all kind of sizes and bodyshapes, but when it comes to gyaru I've only seen girls thin as models. Is the thin body a unspoken requirement to carry out this style properly?

I truly adore Gyaru fashion but I must admit its hard to pull it off. It seems like it is an unspoken guideline to be thin. I would say that I am pretty tiny here in the US compared but wearing gyaru is somewhat hard for me to wear since some of the sizes are superbly small (like xxs). Also, their magazines only captures skinny girls.

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with Kyutie. It seems like there is an unspoken guideline to be thin and I don't actually like saying that, but it's what is advertised. That's not to say that you can't pull off Gal as a curvy woman - it's just that thinness is what is marketed and promoted.
This is especially obvious in the back of Gal magazines where they advertise hordes of diet pills, slimming treatments, and the like. I say so long as you know how to work with the body you have and wear clothes that flatter, you should still make a wonderful Gal.

I was thinking that perhaps it was just the models. The lolita models aren't curvy either. However the fashion spread across the world which lead to outfit photos of different people spread over internet and somehow made it more accepteble... However the gyaru style doesn't seem so spread as lolita, and all the picture online is of japanese girls where 99% of them are model pictures. But when you say the gyaru mags has advertisement of diet pills i might think this is on a whole other level... but i agree with you, if you know how to work with your body you can still make a wonderful gal :)

See, like I accept both thinness and curviness so long as the individual is properly maintaining their health. I actually don't like the fact that the magazines these girls read promote diet pills and the like - it's just horrible. This is the kind of stuff that they accept as their ideal - this twisted mental image of being below the recommended BMI. That's just not good for you.
And yeah, I think the thing about the lolita culture is that it was spread around the world much faster and sooner than the gyaru culture. And so, I think that the lolita culture had more time to mix and mesh with more body types around the world. That and I think that the lolita style itself is more flexible with body types - definitely more people friendly. (But again, like I said, it could definitely be because its been more widely recognized internationally for far longer than gal - so people have had more time to experiment with it.)

I'm just wondering, what exactly would you say is 'Curvy'?? i noticed that some people have different views on it. Also, I dont think it matters if you're curvy or tiny to pull off Gal. The media may make it seem that way and may only prefer thin Gals, but if you believe that you're Gal and you're pulling off the fashion style/statement then you -ARE- Gal. Its the clothes and makeup that make you Gal, not your body shape or genetics.

I agree that's it's an unspoken rule. Kinda like visual kei, you HAVE to have some type of wicked hair, or people aren't going to see it as fully visual kei. With Gyru, if you don't have the thinness, then you don't have the whole look. And as a curvy woman(and when i say curvy, i mean child-bearing hips overlord)It honestly doesn't bother me. There are some stylies that should only be worn by skinny people(Like mayjorly ruffled tops, because if a curvy woman wears that, it's just unflattering)and some stylies that can only be worn by curvy women(Tight fitted dress? Looks AMAZING on curves)

Hey guys,
gonna be kinda harsh.
Let's be
honest, isn't this an unspoken rule for everything?
When have you
ever heard "aw man, I wish I was big enough to fit into those plus sized
clothes, they are so cute"? You don't. Because for someone truely plus sized they are mostly poorly designed and make you look like a tent. On purpose. Don't want those big gals to start feeling secure about themselves, oh no!
Not my opinion obvs., but it's our society. I would say anything over a size 8
is criticized, though I believe the North American average is size 16. This is
great for business since the fashion industry can sell you overpriced tiny
clothes. If you can't fit bogus-pharmaceuticals get to rake in the
cash while you stuff your face with your money, desperately trying to fit in
them.
It's worse with gal, because really lots of asian girls are smaller to begin with. So you can actually open a page and see
a girl who has seen a lot of love from the liquify tool and free transform
being touted as 88 lbs at 5'5. And we are
expected to look at her with some sort of wide eyed wonderment, as an ideal of
ourselves. Instead of someone who probably has a mental problem being
encouraged to the fullest. I'll post the pic later if I get my scanner
working.... Now, the average weight for Japanese women is about 110 lbs. So if the majority of Japanese women would have to starve themselves to get that thin, how can the average western girl have any chance?
If anyone
wants this sort of thing to stop, well you're really going to have to stop
handing these people money.
which I won't ㅋㅋㅋ
imo as long as
you aren't falling into the obese catagory you're all good bb. hm nice rant. feels good man ps.. something is going wrong with my posting... is my font all different sizes to anyone else tldr; It is most profitable to make girls feel bad about themselves, and that's what makes the world go round

I agree with you that the clothes and make up makes a gal, but how come there are no curvy girls then? We live in a society where we spead our personal pictures all over internet. And there should be private pictures or curvy japanese girls too. I really don't belive that "all japanese are thin". I rather belive that no one who is curvy would even dare to try gal. Here's one article about weight loss. You can see the on the "previous" pic that the girls are def not in any need of loosing weigh. They're perfectly normal and healty. Why would a "before" girl think she couldn't pull of gal? i mean, really?

No, but i've hear people whining about japanese brand is too big. Yep, i have. People are always jealous on petit girls, but if you ask the girls, they want to grow a size. Of course the ideal might be to be thin these days, however that doesn't stop us to wear what we like. I'm a head taller and most likely 15 kg heavier than the japanese lolitas who invented the style and the brands. Does it stop me? No. So would a few kilos and some curves stop a girl from wearing gyaru? Obviously. I know a swedish gal. she buys all her gal stuff in swedish stores, in swedish sizes. And i must admit she's a wonderful gal. Is she curvy? No, she's slim as a stick. Even tho she's most likely a lot taller than the japanese girls, she still has the same proportions. She doesn't have too be this thin, cus she's has no need to fit in japanese sizes since all theclothes she's wearing is swedish, yet she's that thin.
