Hi guys I need your help! I'm having a debate in school about wether you should raise our studyallowance here in Sweden or not. Studyallowance is money that you get everymonth here for just going to school. We currently get 1050 sek (about 157 USD) I'm suppose to debate against raising it and I need you (who don't live in Sweden) to tell me what you do to raise your money! Do you have part time jobs? Do you get money from your parents? or do you simply live without it? Please tell me and help me ^^ Thanks for your help!

Here in the UK we have this thing called EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance). You can get £10-£30 a week if you stay on in further education. When I was in 6th form college I used to get £10 a week. You can only claim this money if your household has a low income and how much you get a week depends on how low the income is.
Sadly it seems that this scheme is being scrapped. In fact, there have been protests this week about it. It was only brought in around 2004 and I was one of the first to get it. I really hope they keep it because it made a huge difference to get that £40 a month. Although I do admit that sometimes my money went on clothes instead of school stuff

Well.. We don't get any money for going to school or university. :/ I think it's a good thing for families with low budget. Here in Germany you can get some money from the state called BAFÖG. But you can only get this if your parents aren't that rich or own things with worth like a house, cars, etc.I wouldn't get this help from the state because my family owns two houses (but my parents are divorced!! because of this "we" (mum - me and sister - dad) got two houses). I can't use my parents money and if they say: No! You will not get any money from us. I have to live with that and may not study at university because i can't raise the money for it. You have to pay fees for studying in some provinces up to 700€ for 6 months (~6240 SEK)! Isn't that cruel? You want to learn something and you can't because you don't have the money for it? I think everybody should have the same chances.

Holy cow! You get PAID to do to school? We gotta pay like 20,000 USD to go to school here D: we get jobs, borrow money, mooch from parents and work our butts off and STILL have to pay!
(However, there IS something I'm going to do where I work while I learn so I'm getting paid for a year to get half a year credits :))

i get EMA but i still have to pay for college and also my parents wont pay for anything like stationary or trips so i have to do that myself and since i cant seem to get a decent part time job where i live i have to rely on paper rounds which take up a lot of my time DX so my money vanishes quickly they used to do bonuses at the end of terms but thats been abolished TT^TT

btw guys 'college' in the UK is the same as your last 2 years of high school. at 16 you can choose to go to a college or stay on at your high school for 6th form. the EMA money is only for people ages 16-19, who's household income is below £30,000. colleges like this are only free for those under 18, if you're older than that its about £150ish a year. we dont call university colllege lol, so we don't actually get paid to get a degree! though despite this if you have a low household income you do get a maintenance grant when you're at university. this can be anything from £0-1800 a year, depending on your income, to encourage people from less privelaged backgrounds to go to university. if you live in Scotland university is completely free

@ AnCafeL0VE, if you're arguing against raising the amount, I think a good point to make would be that the government could use the money they would save not raising the study allowance to improve education/youth services etc. you could also give examples of why the amount given out now is enough e.g. the amount given now is fine because with a small part time job it's a large enough amount to get school supplies AND enjoy yourself! :) Also you could say that many countries don't have this system and the kids manage fine without it - even though it's not technically true lol, without systems like the study allowance and the EMA, kids from worse backgrounds are at a complete disadvantage and dont think they can afford to stay in school but nvm heheh >.< Also you could say that giving kids too much money will stop them from needing part time jobs, which are really good at teaching kids responsibility and how to work in the adult world hope that was some help ^.^'
