Halloween is ever nearing and I've been thinking... One of the rude comments towards lolitas and other snazzy dressers I hear often is the classic in the thread title and as it gets closer to Halloween these insults might increase. After thinking about it for a while I find this comment more and more bizarre. Lot's of people like Halloween in one way or another, and if not Halloween they probably like Christmas, Hanukkah, or some other holiday. If people can enjoy the escapism and surrealism of the holidays why can they not understand wanting to have some of that feeling everyday?
I think anyone who is faced with a comment like this could use that love of the holidays as an example to explain what you are doing, rather then using insults back or just simply ignoring.
I personally don't think that explaining what lolita/vk/whatever is, is a good way to educate people. Peoples tastes in style differ so much I'm sure most people who don't like something like lolita could care less about where it came from, but most know the happy feeling of opening a present or dressing in a costume.

Long story short I'd encourage people to explain their choice of dress in feelings and experiences rather then trying to explain where the style came from or that it's a 'real' style (as I've seen lots of egl sites recommend). This is of course mostly for situations where you are being directly confronted by someone rather then just being shouted at or whatever.

Wow long post. Anyone else have any appropriate ways to respond to insults, or better yet some stories about successfully talking with someone who has confronted you?

Good point! Make a positive out of a negative! ^_^ awesome idea!

I wore lolita in October last year and got rude stares, and I tried ganguro for a class presentation on which I gave a public speech about what ganguro is lol, and it was like really soon after Halloween, so this girl on my dorm floor gave me this really mean deliberate look that pretty much said "wth it's not halloween anymore" to me... u_u;; lol... I didn't get the exact comment you said, though I read it on a LOT of people's faces when I wore lolita before Halloween in October. I was asked if I was in a play, wearing a theater costume, if I was Little Bo Peep, if I was Cinderella (what the heck? That was a bad one, haha ;P), and some guy from pretty far away shouted at me "HEY ALICE!" (I was wearing my sax blue JSK e_e')....all of this in one day only haha... ...

Also I would say if are new and insecure in your fashion if you have any friends to walk with you (in the clothes or not) to walk with you the first couple of times it would be good. I remember when I did my first cosplay I was going with my two sisters who were also cosplaying for the first time. We were all so shy and nervous, and on the way walking there the very first comment we got on our costumes what a guy on a skateboard going "what the *bleep*?" We all just laughed so hard, and weren't nervous a bit the rest of the day.

Haha, everyone is so much nicer than me. I'm just immature.

To be honest... I usually say something like "go **** yourself" or give them the finger, or make a sarcastic remark on their oh-so-creative clothing choice.

In a way that reflects my punk clothing.  I say it in a way that sounds like I don't care what they say, 'cause I really don't anymore.

Hey, at least I don't get bothered by them again.

But actually, I don't get that kind of stuff all too often, maybe because my style makes me kinda scary and difficult to approach. (Although that's also why I don't have a boyfriend.)

I'm a masterful mystical maniac.

Hmm...no one really sends me those insults, because there's tons of other guys that dress more outrageous. (Their fashion is based off K-Pop bands, like SHINee and DBSK) Also because...I'm a guy? I don't care what people say about me, I like my clothes.
I hope you don't hate fish. :)
