Well, it seems we all have the same advice for each other.
I think it is sort of a good thing that so many people have these experiences. When I was first starting out I was 100% ignorant to how many people actually liked vk, lolita, etc.

Having this thread is like a small emotional reinforcement for those of us that feel like they are all alone in a world of people that don't want to understand something different.
i'm kind of glad I asked. I actually feel a lot better hearing others stories of their insults it kind of helps not to feel so alone.

I'm the only lolita i know of in South East London (lolz)
And people stare at me for AGES in shopping centres or when im out or walking or on the bus.
I don't mind if they like double take or something, fair enough i dont expect them to think its normal. of course its not "normal" in the western world.

But the worst experience I had was when i went to kingston shopping centre with my two best friends who aren't Lolita.
I had my platform lace up white shoes on and blue dress with hearts on it (the one in my picture)
And i had people staring for ages and it was really uneasy. Some girl even said "what the eff is she wearing!"
I had comments like that such us "effin weirdo" "what the hell" or "FREAKKK"
It really knocked my confidence that day and i was really upset when i got home.

Usually i don't take notice but that day i was in a mood.

The best way to deal with nasty comments from strangers is just smile or wave or give them a asian face (like the tongue and droopy eye thing or the bunny ears with your fingers)  They usually just laugh sarcastically or say nothing. trust me it makes you feel really good inside :D
And if people are staring shout " TAKE A PICTURE " or shout " KAWAIIIIIIIIIIII" in your highest pitch voice they usually look away
or just stare back really instensely
But so far i've had lovely comments and smiles from people :D some people are really really interested in what you're wearing.

also i know this isnt really a self confidence blow but, I've had to deal with REALLY bad experiences with men and there "interest" in my outfits
for instance there was one guy at the bus stop and he had been giving me the eye for a while i was literally crapping myself whilst on my phone updating my FB status
and when i got on the bus he came and sat opposit me and then he asked why i was wearing what i was. I was like its Lolita its a japanese fashion
he was like oh really i thought it was a book about an older man molesting a little girl
i was like D: yeah but this is a fashion style not a book.
then he was like you sure you just dont dress like a little girl to attract older men
i welled up with tears around that time and this woman asked me if i was OK as she had been watching the whole thing. I ended up getting off the bus three stops earlier and waiting for the next one

I live in rural Greene County, Indiana and the most fashionably adventurous people at my school are the occasional Goths. My odd hybrid of Punk, Goth, and Hippy is just too much for my simple-minded school mates to handle. I get verbally harrassed just about every day. Not just by the students. Here's one instance: One of my favorite styles is one that I stole from Yu-Gi-Oh! (Yugi often wears two belts, one through his belt loops on his pants and the other slanting across his legs below the first belt.) Well, the first time I wore that this year, one of the teachers kept smirking and staring at me. About half way through the day we were walking down the same hallway but going in opposite directions (he was walking towards me). When he was standing right next to me, he turned to another teacher, wearing that same cocky smirk he was earlier, and said "Sorry, I'm having trouble with my belt today". It was disgusting. Isn't he supposed to be a professional? *shakes head sadly*

Anyway... Most of the time I just simply have no idea how to deal with these kind of situations. My immediate response is either extreme anger or disgust or sometimes both. I'm one who tries as hard as I can to avoid violence and such but sometimes its really hard. These kinds of people have no business insulting me for being myself. I wouldn't treat them any differently if they weren't the ones starting things with me in the first place, ya know. But if it's a student messing with me I will either glare, tell them to f*ck themselves or their mothers, or just ignore them. If it's a teacher I will usually just ignore them and act like what they're saying doesn't affect me at all. Ignoring people is one of the hardest things to do, but in the end I think it is your best option. I wish anyone stuck in these kinds of situations the best of luck in handeling them with dignity and intelligence.

I've never had anyone call me anything other then freak so now "freak" just is like saying "special". When someone calls me a freak I curtsy and say "why thank you. It's so nice to see someone like me." Usually the don't say anything or just sneer and turn their khaki butts away and go on. I have been kicked out of a store for just being lolita.
I got this Idea a couple of days ago. Every time you see a person staring at you think of it as an opportunity to get in their heads that people that dress different are HUMANS and not beasts and need to be shot down with words.

Every time someone stars at you smile back and wave, if they smile back or wave YEAY! you got one person! see how many you can get! cross one of your people off it you make them mad at you because of how or what you did to them.

Kinda fun!
OH MY GOTH. You got kicked out of a store for being LOLITA?!?!?!?!? That is the dumbest thing I have EVER heard!!! (If you don't mind me asking, what store was it? You know, so I can avoid it in the future.)

Well, when out in all black (like I used to do every day), though I cannot remember details of the outfit and makeup, I walked into the local shopping mall and saw 2 girls laughing in my direction. Both were overweight with their stomachs sticking out of their singlets (no offense to anybody who is overweight, nothing wrong with it it looks great just not hanging out of too small clothing). That encounter is pretty much self explanatory. Look at them (yuck) look at me (though I may not remember the ooutfit it was flattering). That same day I walked into the bargain store. 2 girls walked off when I walked over to the hair and make up section. They were either a) scared or b) stealing things and didn't wanna be caught. Then I walked into the chemist. There's this neat little tv as you walk in showing the sercurity camera, it gives you a back view of yourself. Walking in I looked up, and wondered who that hot girl was, then realised... it was me. Insults for me are rare and as the above story illustrated, on the days where I think I look my best :)

(PS with the camera thing I wasn't being up myself, I honestly didn't realise it was me... I looked so tall from that angle!)

I think I dress "Japanese" since I am 15 years old. Not Lolita rather kawaii with bright colours, short skirts, loose socks or overknee-socks. Or flowers, bows, fruit, pig-tails and so on. And colourful make-up and everything.

Most of the people stared in school, now in university and of course on the street. Mostly those people who always wear jeans and mud-like colours (grey. brown, beige and so on). I always look back or even gaze at them from head to toe so that they feel uncomfortable. Or I smile ironically.

I tell myself that they all wear a boring grey uniform. In my favourite manga "Gokinjo monogatari" the main person (that's how I dress as well) had to wear a white- dark green school uniform like the colours of rice balls with sea weed. All the others are boring rice balls, she is rather candy or fruit. That's how I try to think.

But there was one event that kinda made me sad. I found out that my boyfriend (who knows and accepts my style) thought that I wear short skirts because I LIKED the stares of men and wanted to attract them. I was really shocked because those men who stare are disgusting. And wearing a skirt with pink flowers or hearts isn't really "sexy". I just wear them because I don't like long skirts or trousers. But I was so surprised when he said that!

Strangely we have many goths or VKs in Berlin so most people just ignore them and don't say anything rude. Maybe also because of all these vampire movies and series....But when it comes to something that they have never seen, they have to have some kind of opinion. I'm often called Sailor Moon (which is totally ok because that was my first anime and probably the only one they know) or Pippi Langstrumpf which has nothing to do with Japan if you google it. Just because I have pig-tails and that is the only person they know that wears some too.

I think we have to accept that people try to make sense of their environment. And when they see something they do not know and understand, something that doeasn't fit in,  they search for an explanation. Like "It's just a freak or a Sailor Moon-fanatic." And if they don't find an explanation they blow a raspberry and stare.
